Why We’re Choosing Not to Send Our Kids Back to School

We aren’t happy (but it’s not why you think)

While some school districts, like Los Angeles and San Diego, have decided to go back to school online-only, and others like those in New York City will have students meet in person only a couple of days a week, our district is giving students (and I can only hope teachers) an option to either go to school or do it completely online at home.

According to the results of our district’s latest survey, our family is among only 12% of the population who plan to opt for fully online learning in the fall.

Whether we admit it or not, we humans have a need to feel accepted and liked, so we prefer to follow the crowd. Publicly going against the majority opinion is uncomfortable. Our discomfort can cast doubt.

In these cases, to double-check that we’ve made the right decision, we may ask ourselves, am I happy with this decision? We erroneously think that if we are happy then it is the right decision. Or we believe that if we’ve made the right decision, then it will naturally follow that we will be happy about it.
