What Our Family is Choosing to Do This Summer
It starts with being honest about life during a pandemic
The school year has ended for us. We watched an online promotion ceremony marking the end of my youngest’s elementary school years. She wore a new outfit and asked me to curl her hair. Afterward, I took her photo in front of the Japanese Maple in the backyard to mark the occasion, then she changed back into shorts and a t-shirt and we ate dinner.
She didn’t see any of her friends and they didn’t see her. No extended family attended.
After dinner, our family played a few games of two-on-two volleyball. Then we came inside and ate brownies for dessert.
That’s when they started expressing concern about the summer, what would they do the whole time? Would there be any fun?
What should summer look like during a pandemic?
Making summer plans usually falls under my domain. I love finding camps to suit my girls’ interests, planning car trips to show them different parts of the country, and hosting play dates with friends.
This year, during a pandemic, I still wanted to make the summer fun. I’m acutely aware that we only have a limited number of summers left together.
