I always enjoy your writing. If you’re ethically opposed to the way animals are treated for food (it sounds like you are close, if you haven’t decided already), why wouldn’t you share this with your kids? Here’s the test I use: Would I be willing to do what’s necessary to make the bacon/chicken nugget/burger from the living animal? The answer is no. And asking someone else to do it for me would be hypocritical. I’m raising my kids vegan and telling them why I believe it’s right (health/environment/animal welfare/effect on the world’s poor), but also letting them know that when they are out of the house, it’s up to them. Did your daughter’s friend’s parents ever find out you showed them the infamous gummy bear video? (I’ve seen it and offered to show my kids, but they declined. My description sufficed.) I tell my kids the truth about food, but don’t feel it’s my place with their friends, unless a parent asks me for help in transitioning a child to a vegan or vegetarian diet.
