For many people this is a choice, not a given.
Mankind has largely abused the "dominion" we have over animals. If we view dominion as a having a responsibility for animals, we have been an utter failure. Animals are the only creatures a person can say they "love", but then kill and eat. The disconnect is startling. (If someone claimed to love people, but then ate body parts three times a day, we'd think them mad. And we wouldn't give any credence to what they said.)
Maybe if more people had to kill the animals they eat themselves they would see how this couldn't actually be true. And then maybe then they'd see how preferable it is to open a can of beans instead. And healthier too.
